We're probably not telling you anything new when we say that social media is persistently widely used in the United States. How much? No less than 96 percent of Dutch people are on social media daily. And that's a lot! So it is not high mathematics that your target group can be found on social media.

Anno 2020 WhatsApp is most used in the United States and we see the biggest increase in user numbers with YouTube and Instagram. Facebook remains important, but does have a decline in use by young people. As a company, it is useful to know where your target audience is: you do not need to be active on all social media channels, but rather focus on your most important channels. But which ones are they? In this blog we will tell you more about the channels that various target groups use. So you know which social media channels you can safely stay away from and where you should spend more time.

Social media usage in general

As we said, at least 96 percent of the Dutch population is on social media. It is also interesting to look at the daily use: that is 98 minutes per day! Interestingly, the daily usage figures per generation are actually quite close to each other. Over-65s spend 82 minutes a day on social media and 15- to 19-year-olds spend the most time on social media with 143 minutes a day.

Compared to last year, Facebook and Twitter are still used in equal numbers and we see the biggest increase among YouTube users (430,000 more) and Instagram users (710,000 more).

Social media: where is your target group?

Your target audience on social media is based on ¨demographics¨. Demographics show whether on social media are for men or women, of what age and from what region. These demographics can also provide more detailed data, such as what these users mostly search on and what groups they are active in.

To know where your target group is, you first need to know who your target group is. You may know this through store visitors or order data, but you can also find this out by determining the demographics of your own website. When you have a new website created by Monkey Vision , we can find out this data for you. We can see what kind of people visit your website and moreover how they move through the website. Super interesting and useful information!

Make sure you know your target group

Do you know your target audience? If so, you can use our overview to determine where they are in the social media landscape. The data comes from Newcom Research & Consultancy, they have been conducting the United States' largest annual survey of social media usage in the United States for 10 years. In this blog, we look at your target audience on the following social media channels:

  1. Whatsapp
  2. Facebook
  3. Youtube
  4. Instagram

1. WhatsApp

Almost all Dutch youngsters use WhatsApp: this number is 97 percent. The large group of 20- to 64-year-olds also shows that WhatsApp is virtually indispensable: at least 90 percent use the app. Over the age of 64, the percentage is a bit lower: 78 percent among 65- to 79-year-olds and 56 percent among those over 80.

What can you do with this information?

This means you could move your customer service for a large group from the United States largely to WhatsApp. Is your target audience higher in age? Then you might have to hold off on this for a while.

2. Facebook

Facebook has suffered from scandals and negative coverage for a while. As a result, the number of users declined slightly, but this year we see it growing slightly again. Moreover, Facebook has never suffered very badly: users remain quite active. Today as many as 7.1 million United States use this channel. That is an increase of 4 percent compared to last year.

Per target group, Facebook use is a lot less contiguous than Whatsapp. The numbers at a glance:

Usage 15 - 19 years: 51%.

Usage 20 - 39 years: 82%

Use 40 - 64 years: 77%.

Usage 65 - 79 years: 67%.

Usage 80+: 59%.

What can you do with this information?

We see young people in particular moving away from Facebook more and more. If you're selling a product or providing a service to this target audience, for example, it's better to bet on other channels, such as Instagram. It is also good to see that Facebook (despite negative reports of a decline in users) is still widely used in the 20 to 39 age group. So keep advertising to this group, distribute content and possibly use Facebook Messenger for your customer service.

3. YouTube

YouTube usage continues to rise. Over 9 million Dutch people are using YouTube this year, showing a 5 percent growth compared to 2019. With YouTube, however, daily usage remains (relatively!) low at 2.8 million users per day.

What can you do with this information?

Advertising on YouTube is very expensive and not for the average SME or sole trader, therefore it is not the most interesting social media channel for this blog. Do you have a business that has good visual appeal and can use tutorials, for example? Then be sure to use YouTube by creating a channel for videosthat you can also put on your new website. Useful videosare effective for any target audience!

4. Instagram

Instagram continues to grow rapidly! Meanwhile, 5.6 million Dutch people use this social media channel. This represents an increase of 14% compared to 2019. Instagram is used on a daily basis by half of this number. This means a daily growth of 29 percent compared to last year. With Instagram, the target group of 15 to 19-year-olds is particularly interesting: more than 80 percent use Instagram.

What can you do with this information?

Do you have a visual product or service that can be beautifully portrayed? Promote it with Instagram. Were you initially very active on Facebook, but see that you're not reaching your younger audience as much as you used to? Then move your content to Instagram, or do a double take.

Instagram is part of Facebook, which makes it easy to link these channels. You can set it up so that when you post something on Instagram, it automatically appears on Facebook. So no effort at all!

If you have a website design in Remote by Monkey Vision , we will provide social media icons with links on your website. This way visitors can click through immediately and see that your company is up to date and up-to-date!
